The Journey Begins: A Glimpse of the Amazon’s Heart
Our adventure into the It Rainforest started in Manaus, Brazil, the bustling city that serves as the gateway to the Amazon. From here, we embarked on a journey that would take us deep into the heart of the jungle. To reach our remote jungle lodge, we traveled by a combination of boats, buses, and even small canoes—seven modes of transportation in total, a reminder of the region’s isolation and the difficulty of access.
The first of many memorable moments came when we crossed the confluence of two mighty rivers—the It (Rio Solimões) and the Rio Negro. Known as the “Meeting of the Waters,” this unique phenomenon occurs because the two rivers, with distinctly different water qualities, flow side by side without mixing for several kilometers. The light-colored Amazon and the dark Rio Negro create an extraordinary visual contrast, a perfect introduction to the surreal landscapes we were about to encounter.
The Flooded Forest: A World of Water and Trees
Arriving at our lodge, nestled in a region known as the flooded forest, we found ourselves surrounded by an incredible sight. As the waters from the rainy season slowly receded, the riverbanks revealed high watermarks on trees, indicating how much the water had risen in previous months. In this part of the world, the annual water levels fluctuate dramatically, transforming the landscape each year. During the rainy season, entire forests are submerged, and the trees look like mere shrubs, their trunks buried beneath several feet of water.
The water’s effect on the landscape is fascinating. We encountered dried floating grass that had once been part of the submerged forest, hanging high in the tree canopies, offering a visual testament to the fluctuating water levels. It’s a surreal scene—one that helps to understand the adaptive nature of life in the It.
Biodiversity Like No Other
The It Rainforest is one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, home to a stunning array of plant and animal species. During our stay, we were able to witness the incredible variety of plant life, including towering Brazil nut and kapok trees, as well as fruit-bearing cashew and cocoa trees. The forest is alive with fascinating plants that have adapted to the unique environment of the Amazon.
Among the most remarkable species are the world’s largest water lily pads—Victorian Water Lilies—which can grow up to 3 meters wide. These massive pads provide a platform for birds such as the Northern Jakana to walk across, adding to the sense of wonder that pervades this region.
While animal sightings are often rare due to the dense foliage, we were fortunate enough to spot several animals during our river excursions. Curious cappuccino monkeys played in the treetops, while more elusive squirrel monkeys darted away at the slightest noise. Along the riverbanks, we saw small caimans, and we were even lucky enough to encounter the elusive pink river dolphins, known locally as boto. These freshwater dolphins are endemic to the Amazon and, though shy and solitary, offer a glimpse of the magical wildlife the region harbors.
Living with the River: The People of the Amazon
Life in the Amazon Basin is defined by the river. For the communities that live along its banks, the river serves as both a source of livelihood and transportation. Here, boats replace cars, and even the school bus is a boat. During our visit, we witnessed local fishermen working together in their boats, catching fish not for sale but for their own consumption. It was a humbling reminder of how life in the Amazon remains simple yet connected to nature.
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the home of an indigenous family, who no longer live a purely traditional lifestyle but still retain a deep connection to their roots. We learned how they process manioc (cassava) into tapioca, an essential staple in the Amazonian diet. This labor-intensive process involves the entire community, as the manioc must be properly prepared to remove harmful toxins. The family also had an impressive garden, with plants ranging from cashew and guava trees to rows of herbs and vegetables.

As we spent more time in the Amazon, it became clear that this region is more than just a place—it’s a living, breathing entity. From the lush forest floor to the mysterious waters, every corner of the Amazon holds a story, a secret, or a mystery waiting to be uncovered. Its role in the global climate and its irreplaceable value as a biodiversity hotspot make the Amazon Rainforest a treasure for all of humanity.
The peace and serenity of the early mornings and evenings, when the water reflects the lush greenery like a mirror, became some of our most cherished moments. The Amazon is a place of beauty and solitude, where nature reigns supreme, and the pace of life is dictated by the rhythms of the river and the seasons.
