A team of passionate astronomers in Abu Dhabi has delivered a stunning visual treat—an ultra-detailed, 10-second time-lapse video showing the Sun like you’ve never seen it before. Captured from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory, the footage reveals incredible solar activity including blazing prominences, swirling filaments, and dark sunspots—right from the skies of the UAE.

The clip, assembled by UAE astronomer Mohammed Odeh with support from Osama Ghannam, Anas Mohammed, and Khalfan Al-Nuaimi, was created using thousands of images shot over an 80-minute session around noon on Monday, June 3.

So what exactly are we looking at? The video showcases:

• Solar prominences erupting from the edges of the Sun
• Tiny, fast-moving spicules dancing along its outer limb
• Dark filaments streaking across the Sun’s surface
• Sunspots—those cooler, darker patches caused by magnetic activity

To pull this off, the team used a specialized Hydrogen-alpha solar telescope. Unlike regular telescopes that show the Sun’s photosphere (the visible surface), this instrument captures the chromosphere—a more dynamic layer that’s invisible to the naked eye. Through this lens, solar features that are typically hidden come to life with breathtaking clarity.

This kind of observation doesn’t just look cool—it’s important science. Tracking the Sun’s behavior helps researchers better understand space weather, solar storms, and their impact on Earth.

It’s rare to see this level of solar detail from Earth-based observatories, especially outside major international research hubs. So for this team in Abu Dhabi to capture it? Pretty epic.
