In a world where adrenaline-filled experiences are on the rise, Surf Abu Dhabi, the world’s largest artificial surf park, is preparing to open its doors this October on Hudayriyat Island. As a complete novice with no prior surfing experience, I recently had the opportunity to be among the first to test out the waves at this state-of-the-art facility. This surf park, developed by Modon in collaboration with the Kelly Slater Wave Company, promises to make a splash in the region’s adventure sports scene.

My experience started with a blend of anticipation and apprehension. Despite my lack of experience—even never having stood on a surfboard before—I was drawn to the opportunity to experience a sport that has captured imaginations worldwide. Upon arrival, the warm welcome from the staff immediately set a tone of excitement and positivity. Their enthusiasm for the water was infectious, making even the most anxious of beginners feel at ease.
After a quick check-in, I was taken on a tour of Surf Abu Dhabi’s impressive facilities. The park boasts stunning views, with sleek, modern architecture blending seamlessly into the natural beauty of Hudayriyat Island. A comprehensive safety briefing followed, where every aspect of surfing and wipeouts (inevitable for beginners like me) was covered in detail. This helped ease my initial nerves and reinforced the park’s commitment to safety.
Wearing my wetsuit and clutching a surfboard for the first time, the weight of my new adventure truly sank in. The trainers, a knowledgeable and patient team, guided me through the fundamentals: how to position my feet, how to paddle, and how to perform the famous “pop-up” to stand on the board. Their constant reassurance—”Don’t worry, we’ll be right here with you”—kept my spirits high, even when doubt crept in.
Before entering the water, I had a brief conversation with Ryan Watkins, General Manager at Surf Abu Dhabi, about my zero surfing experience. With an encouraging smile, he confidently stated, “I guarantee you will surf today.” While his words filled me with hope, they also added a layer of pressure—could I really pull it off?
The sight of the wave pool, expansive and shimmering under the sun, was awe-inspiring. The pool mimicked the feeling of being on an actual beach, with saltwater splashing against my face as I approached the center on a jet ski. The trainers gave me last-minute tips as my adrenaline surged. Finally, the moment came: “First wave coming up!” shouted a trainer. I took a deep breath and paddled towards it.
What followed were a series of wipeouts—more than I could count. As a beginner, being thrown off the board felt like an inevitable part of the learning curve. But the trainers stayed close, offering me encouragement after every fall. “Tap your head to show you’re okay,” one suggested after yet another wipeout. Their steady support and patience were essential in keeping me motivated despite the challenges.
On my fifth attempt, something magical happened: I felt the wave lifting me. I managed to stand up and ride the wave, albeit shakily, but with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. The sensation of gliding across the water was pure exhilaration—an adrenaline rush like no other. The combination of speed, control, and the natural power of the wave created a feeling of liberation that I had never expected to experience.
After my session, I took some time to relax at the beachfront oasis, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and reflecting on the day’s events. It wasn’t just the surfing that made this day special—it was the camaraderie, the thrill of trying something new, and the realization that even complete beginners can find their footing (literally) with the right support.

I left with newfound skills, a sense of accomplishment, and a strong desire to return.
