Introduction Of ChatGPT
OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the world’s most popular chatbot application, but rival services are rapidly expanding their user bases. Data from analytics firms Similarweb and Sensor Tower highlight the increasing competition among AI-powered chatbots, including Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, DeepSeek’s chatbot, and xAI’s Grok.

Chatbot Web Traffic Trends
Similarweb, a firm that estimates website traffic, has recorded significant growth in chatbot web app usage. In March, Google’s Gemini reached 10.9 million average daily visits worldwide, reflecting a 7.4% month-over-month increase. Microsoft’s Copilot also saw a rise, growing by 2.1% to 2.4 million daily visits.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude gained traction with 3.3 million daily visits, and China-based DeepSeek’s chatbot saw an impressive 16.5 million visits in March. Notably, xAI’s Grok matched DeepSeek’s numbers, despite only having a web app for a few months.
Despite this growth among competitors, ChatGPT remains dominant, surpassing 500 million weekly active users in late March. David Carr, an editor at Similarweb, highlighted that while DeepSeek currently holds the No. 2 spot, Grok has been the fastest-growing AI platform, with traffic surging nearly 800% month-over-month.
Mobile Chatbot App Growth
AI chatbot apps are also gaining momentum on mobile platforms, driven by advancements in AI models and new feature rollouts. Sensor Tower’s data reveals that during the week of February 24, following the release of Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, the Claude app experienced a 21% week-over-week increase in active users. Similarly, after Google made its Gemini 2.0 Flash model generally available, the Gemini app saw a 42% growth in weekly active users.
Abraham Yousef, a senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower, attributes this growth not only to the release of new AI models but also to the introduction of enhanced capabilities. Google, for instance, recently launched a “canvas” feature in Gemini, allowing users to preview coding project outputs. Similarly, Anthropic has been steadily adding tools to its Claude platform to enhance user experience.
The Future of AI Chatbots
While AI chatbot adoption is on the rise across multiple platforms, OpenAI’s ChatGPT still maintains a commanding lead. According to Yousef, ChatGPT had ten times the number of mobile app weekly active users compared to Gemini and Claude combined as of March.
Nonetheless, the landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with continuous advancements in AI and a growing number of use cases driving user engagement. As AI companies continue to innovate, the chatbot market is set for further expansion, shaping the future of human-computer interaction.
