This year, I had the opportunity to embark on an extraordinary road trip across Namibia, an experience that turned out to be one of the most incredible adventures of my life! For years, I had dreamed of visiting this remarkable African country, captivated by its breathtaking landscapes and mesmerizing colors. My expectations were not only met but exceeded by the sheer beauty of nature in the Namib Desert.

- Accommodation: Consider staying at Gondwana Lodges for a luxurious desert experience.

- Be Prepared for Tire Issues: Flat tires are common. Learn how to change a tire before your trip!
- Windhoek Airport: Located about 40 minutes from the city center.
Getting to the Namib Desert from Windhoek
I traveled to Windhoek from Cape Town, but no matter where you’re flying from, arriving in the capital is the best way to start your journey. From Windhoek, the drive to the Namib Desert takes approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Recommended Route:
- Start on Highway C26, a smooth and straight road.
- Turn onto D1275, heading towards Solitaire.
- Drive through Kupferberg Pass and Spreetshoogte Pass (drive slowly here!).
- Stop at Solitaire for fuel, food, and water—this is the last stop before reaching Sesriem.
- Continue for another 30-40 minutes to reach Gondwana Lodges.
Staying at Gondwana Lodges
Namib Dune Star Camp
This unique accommodation offers an exclusive desert experience. Each bungalow features a private terrace, and you can even move your bed outside to sleep under the stars. A jeep transfer from Namib Desert Lodge takes guests to the camp.
Namib Desert Lodge
A well-equipped lodge offering modern amenities, a swimming pool, and excellent dining options. Ideal for those seeking comfort in the desert.
Exploring Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
To visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, drive to Sesriem, the entrance to Namib-Naukluft National Park. Here, you’ll park, pay the entrance fee, and pass through security.
Important: Check the park’s opening hours in advance.
Must-See Landmarks:
- Dune 42 – Best visited at sunrise for spectacular colors.
- Dune 45 – One of the tallest dunes in the world.
- End of the Road – From here, you must take a jeep service to reach Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.
- Deadvlei – A surreal landscape of ancient, dead trees set against towering red dunes. Wear boots to protect against the hot sand.
- Sossusvlei – A stunning, expansive salt and clay pan surrounded by dramatic dunes.
