OpenAI has introduced significant updates to Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT, refining the AI voice assistant to facilitate more natural and engaging real-time conversations. The enhancements, announced on Monday, aim to reduce interruptions and improve user interaction.
Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at It, shared details about these improvements in a video posted on the company’s official social media channels. A key focus of the update is addressing a common issue with AI voice assistants—interrupting users when they pause to think or take a breath.
With this update, free users of ChatGPT can now experience a more responsive version of Advanced Voice Mode that allows them to pause without being interrupted. Meanwhile, paying users, including subscribers to It Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro tiers, will benefit from a more polished AI voice assistant that interrupts less frequently and exhibits a more engaging personality.
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that the enhanced AI voice assistant for paying users is now “more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its responses.”
These improvements come at a time of growing competition in the AI voice assistant market. Notably, Sesame—a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and founded by Oculus cofounder Brendan Iribe—has garnered attention for its highly natural-sounding AI voice assistants, Maya and Miles. Larger tech players, such as Amazon, are also making strides in this space, with plans to launch an LLM-powered version of Alexa.
As the AI voice assistant landscape evolves, OpenAI’s latest updates position ChatGPT as a more refined and competitive option for users seeking a seamless and intelligent conversational experience.
