Travel Guide to Bora Bora: Luxurious

Introduction Of Bora Bora

French Polynesia is a tropical paradise that boasts over 118 islands spread across five diverse island groups, each offering unique experiences. While we only visited Tahiti and Bora Bora on our trip, I am convinced we’ll be returning to explore more of these stunning islands. It was everything I had dreamed of—and then some! With its towering mountains, crystal-clear lagoons, overwater villas, and abundant marine life, this island is the epitome of a luxurious tropical escape.

Bora Bora

If It is on your bucket list, don’t stop at just admiring photos—start planning! It’s absolutely possible to turn your dream trip into a reality, whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, planning a family vacation, or simply looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. This guide will provide everything you need to know to make your trip to Bora Bora unforgettable.

How to Get to Bora Bora

To reach Bora Bora, you’ll first fly into Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete, Tahiti. Several international flights connect to Tahiti, and if you’re traveling from the U.S., it’s closer than you might think! For West Coast travelers, the flight is approximately 7.5 hours from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Here’s a quick look at the best options:

  • From Los Angeles (LAX): Air Tahiti Nui or Air France
  • From San Francisco (SFO): United Airlines (Frenchbee, a budget airline, offers deals as low as $500 for round-trip tickets but is subject to availability and seasonal schedules).

After landing in Tahiti, many travelers will either catch a connecting flight to Bora Bora or stay overnight if the timing requires it. If you find yourself with extra time in Tahiti, be sure to check out my 24 Hours in Tahiti guide for tips on how to make the most of a short stay.

The only way to get to It from Tahiti is by domestic flight via Air Tahiti (not to be confused with Air Tahiti Nui). Flights run multiple times per day and offer breathtaking aerial views of the islands. Be sure to book your internal flights as soon as your dates are confirmed, as modifying these reservations can be difficult.

For the most scenic flight experience, sit on the left side of the plane when flying from Tahiti to Bora Bora, and the right side on your return. You’ll be treated to unparalleled views of Mount Otemanu and Bora Bora’s vibrant lagoon.

Arrival and Transfers in It

Once you arrive at It small and charming airport, your transportation to your resort will be by boat, as the airport is located on a separate islet. If you’re staying on the main island, Air Tahiti offers a free ferry transfer. However, if you’re staying at one of the luxury resorts on private islets (or “motus”), your resort will typically provide boat transfers. Be sure to confirm whether the transfer is included in your booking.

Best Time to Visit Bora Bora

The best time to visit It is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This is the island’s high season, offering ideal weather conditions with minimal rainfall and comfortable temperatures. I visited in August, which is the driest month, although it can be a bit breezy due to trade winds. The water may feel slightly cooler during this time, but the weather was spectacular.

If you’re looking to avoid peak tourist crowds and prices, consider visiting in the shoulder months of April or November. However, be cautious of the rainy season, which runs from December to March. Although some visitors enjoy favorable weather during these months, it’s more of a gamble, especially for first-timers looking to make the most of their bucket-list trip.

Ideal Length of Stay in It

When planning your trip, 5 to 7 days is typically the ideal length of stay in Bora Bora. This gives you enough time to enjoy the stunning scenery, take part in excursions, and relax at your resort. Many visitors choose to combine It with other nearby islands like Moorea or Tahiti, giving them a fuller experience of French Polynesia’s beauty.

Whether you’re snorkeling among coral reefs, lounging in an overwater bungalow, or watching the sunset from a private motu, It is the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable vacation.

Accommodation in It

It offers a range of accommodations, from luxurious five-star resorts with overwater bungalows to more budget-friendly guesthouses and Airbnbs. Most resorts are located on private islets surrounding the main island, offering a sense of privacy and exclusivity. Popular options include:

  • Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora: Known for its overwater bungalows and stunning views of Mount Otemanu.
  • St. Regis Bora Bora Resort: Famous for its luxurious amenities and spacious villas.
  • InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa: Offers eco-friendly overwater villas and a world-class spa.

If you’re looking for a more budget-conscious stay, consider accommodations on the main island of Bora Bora, which are more affordable but still offer access to the island’s beautiful beaches and lagoons.

Activities in Bora Bora

Bora Bora is not just about relaxation—there’s plenty to do! Here are some must-try activities:

  1. Snorkeling & Diving: Bora Bora’s lagoon is teeming with marine life, making it a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. Swim with tropical fish, stingrays, and even sharks in crystal-clear waters.
  2. Lagoon Tours: Take a guided tour around the island’s lagoon, with stops for snorkeling, picnics on secluded beaches, and views of Mount Otemanu.
