Introduction Of X
Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced a temporary pause on its encrypted direct messaging (DM) feature as the company works on making improvements behind the scenes.

In a post shared Thursday from It’s engineering account, the company confirmed that users will still be able to read their previously encrypted messages, but for now, sending new encrypted DMs is off the table. No timeline was given for when the feature will return.
Encrypted messaging became a key focus after Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022. Musk publicly stated his intention to transform It’s messaging system into a secure, private communication tool—one that could rival services like Signal.
The feature first launched in 2023 but was limited to verified users and rolled out with a number of limitations. It didn’t support group chats, encrypted messages only covered text and links (leaving out media files), and it lacked full protection against man-in-the-middle attacks. Additionally, encrypted conversations didn’t sync across devices, which meant they’d disappear if you switched phones or logged in from somewhere new.
For now, users will need to rely on standard DMs as It works to refine the feature. The company hasn’t said when encrypted DMs will be back online—but with privacy and security a growing concern among users, all eyes will be on how It delivers the next iteration.
