Journey To Mount Everest In The Himalayas

A Dream Realized: Setting Foot in Nepal

Mount Everest

What a journey! I am completely hooked on Nepal. My adventure to the base of Mount Everest began when I reached out to Ian Taylor in 2012 after seeing his “Everest for Free” trek. Unsure of how I would perform at altitude, I trusted Ian’s well-structured itinerary, which proved to be the key to my success. I was particularly grateful for the three nights we spent acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar.

Being part of a hiking club in California, I had experience trekking the Santa Lucia range and regularly summiting Black Butte at 7,455 feet. After several months of planning, I gathered a group to join me on this incredible journey, and together, we raised $25,000 for a local non-profit. Mount Everest

Preparing for the Trek

Our team was assembled and ready. While I covered my flight to Kathmandu and the Nepalese visa fee, I was fortunate enough to receive my hike to Everest for free. Instead of keeping this benefit to myself, I shared the discount with my group, reducing the cost of the trek to $2,500 per person. Mount Everest

First Impressions of Kathmandu

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we were immediately captivated by the vibrant atmosphere. After a warm welcome at the airport, we were taken to our upgraded hotel in the Thamel district. That evening, we explored the city, enjoyed the famous Rum Doodle restaurant, and sampled our first Everest beer—a fantastic experience after our long flight from California. Mount Everest

The next day, we embarked on a half-day sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, included in our trek package. Our English-speaking guide took us to the Monkey Temple, the sacred temples of Pashupatinath, and Durbar Square. The city’s history and culture fascinated us, and we wished we had more time to explore.

The Trek Begins: Lukla to Phakding

After an early morning wake-up call at 5 AM, we headed to the airport for our flight to Lukla, one of the world’s most thrilling airports. The short but breathtaking flight through the Himalayas was an unforgettable experience. Upon arrival at Lukla at 8:45 AM, we had breakfast before beginning our three-hour hike to Phakding, descending approximately 1,000 feet. Evenings were spent resting, reading, and staying hydrated. Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

The following day, we hiked to Namche Bazaar, our first real test at altitude. None of us had ever been above 14,000 feet before, making it an exciting challenge. Namche, with its narrow streets, lively markets, and cozy cafés, quickly became a favorite. We played pool at Café Danfe, enjoyed pizza and fresh pastries at the bakery, and explored Ian’s commemorative t-shirt from his 2008 Everest ascent. Spending three nights in Namche allowed us to acclimatize properly, ensuring a smoother journey ahead. Mount Everest

Higher into the Himalayas

Our journey continued to Tengboche, home to the famous monastery. The day’s trek was a mix of stunning views, steep descents, and careful pacing to avoid overexertion. Arriving in Tengboche, we explored the monastery, visited a local bakery, and enjoyed a well-earned rest.

We pressed onward to Pangboche and then to Dingboche at 14,435 feet. This milestone was a celebration for the team, though some members began feeling the effects of the thin air. Our guides kept us hydrated and energized with frequent breaks and snacks. The changing landscape and a light snowfall added to the sense of adventure. Mount Everest

Approaching Everest Base Camp

With only a few days left to our destination, we moved cautiously towards Lobuche, passing through the Dugla Pass and the solemn memorial site honoring Everest’s fallen climbers. This moment reminded us of the mountain’s immense power and the respect it commands. Mount Everest

After a night in Lobuche, we trekked to Gorak Shep, the last stop before Everest Base Camp. The final push took three hours, and reaching base camp was an indescribable moment. Standing at the foot of the world’s tallest mountain filled us with an overwhelming sense of achievement. We took photos, explored the area, and embraced the realization of our goal. Mount Everest

The Grand Finale: Kala Patthar and the Journey Home

The next morning, most of our team ascended Kala Patthar at 18,192 feet, the highest point of our trek. The panoramic view of Everest at sunrise was breathtaking—truly the “roof of the world.”

With our mission accomplished, we began the long journey back, retracing our steps through Gorak Shep, Pheriche, and Namche Bazaar. Our final night in Namche was a celebration at Café Danfe before making our way back to Lukla. After an eight-hour hike, we arrived, exhausted yet elated. Mount Everest

Looking Ahead

We had survived and conquered the Everest Base Camp trek, an adventure that left us inspired and yearning for more. Our sights are now set on Kilimanjaro in 2014—another challenge and another dream to fulfill.

A heartfelt thank you to Ian Taylor and his team for their guidance and support. This journey to the Himalayas was an experience of a lifetime, one I will never forget. Mount Everest
