This year, April ranked as one of the hottest in the past decade, based on data from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). Combine that with a drop in rainfall, and it’s no surprise residents are already reaching for water bottles and sun hats.
So, when does It actually start?
Mark Your Calendar: June 21 Is the Summer Solstice
According to the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG), It in the UAE will officially begin on June 21, the day of the summer solstice. On this day, the sun reaches its highest and most northerly position in the sky, marking the longest day and shortest night of the year.
“This happens because the Earth’s tilt is most directly angled toward the sun at that time,” explained Khadijah Al Hariri, Operations Manager at DAG.
In other words, if you’re wondering when the sun will seem extra intense and hang out in the sky a little too long—it’s the solstice.
How to Stay Safe in the Heat
As the hot season intensifies, the NCM has shared a set of helpful tips to keep cool and stay safe during peak temperatures. Here’s what they recommend:
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and fluids throughout the day.
- Dress smart: Opt for light-colored, breathable cotton clothing.
- Avoid peak sun hours: Try not to be outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.
- Shield yourself: Use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Keep cool indoors: Ensure proper ventilation and avoid stuffy, enclosed areas.
