Waymo and Uber Kick Off Early Access

Introduction Of Waymo

Waymo and Uber are rolling out early access to their new robotaxi service in Atlanta, giving select riders a sneak peek before the full public launch expected later this summer.

This early-access group includes users who signed up for the waitlist earlier this year. Those chosen will be notified through the Uber app and via email. If they opt in, they’ll get the chance to experience a fully autonomous ride and share feedback—both during and after the trip. As a sweetener, riders will receive $10 in Uber credits after completing their first ride with It.

Atlanta is now the second city to welcome the “It on Uber” experience, following its debut in Austin earlier this spring. The service lets Uber users hail a Waymo-operated autonomous vehicle—specifically, a Jaguar I-PACE—from within the Uber app.

The Atlanta launch is part of a broader partnership between Uber and Waymo, first announced in September. The two companies had revealed plans to bring robotaxi service to Austin and Atlanta in early 2025, and now they’re getting a head start.

At launch, the service area in Atlanta will cover 65 square miles, including key neighborhoods like Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View. Like other Waymo markets—Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles—the coverage area will gradually expand as the service scales.

The partnership divides responsibilities between the two companies: Uber manages the vehicle fleet’s logistics—charging, cleaning, and maintenance—as well as customer access via its app. Waymo, meanwhile, takes care of the tech stack and autonomous operations, including rider support throughout the trip.

As Atlanta joins the growing list of U.S. cities with robotaxis on the streets, this early rollout marks another milestone in making self-driving tech more accessible—and more real—for everyday riders.
